More than 30 young European liberals and radicals from all over Europe met in Oslo in order to debate about
globalisation and its effects on Europe in a globalised world. Climate change, corporate social responsibility, ownership, knowledge economy and competitiveness were some of the main objects discussed during the four days seminar.
Among the interesting speakers were British ALDE MEP Diana Wallis. Her lecture reminded us about ‘’the forgotten enlargement’’ meaning the possible accession of Norway and Iceland to the EU. Her argumentation was based on Norway benefiting from EU membership by having a voice in EU policies instead of having EU-legislation (80% in some policy areas) but no influence in the decision-making. The former Norwegian Minister of Education, now head of liberal think-tank Civita, Kristin Clemet gave a lecture about how to built a knowledge economy. She tackled many issues facing today’s higher education systems in Europe.
The philosopher Henrik Syse and the European Liberal Youth talked about ethics in the 21st century. As a researcher at International Peace Research Institute he brought up many questions regarding investment morals.
Lillian Andeneas from the European Commission Delegation to Norway and Iceland was explaining the concept of Flexicurity, meaning the combination of a flexible labour market and employment security.
Besides talking about the current issues mentioned above the seminar attendants also had a chance to explore the night life of Oslo.
The young politicians came to the conclusion that in an ever changing world Europe must come to its grips - in order to be able to protect environment and the European social model Europe should become more competitive and innovative.
